The Story Behind the Mc Donald's Restaurant
After hearing about delicious foods of Mc Donald's, I started searching about this restaurant in Google and You tube. I read a lot. Then I decided to write this story.
Richard and Maurice Mc Donald were born in a family of Irish. They were immigrants in the rural Hampshire. Their father worked as a manger in a shoe factory. He discontinued his work at the age of 42. He told that he can't work anymore. His pension was cut. When they graduated in high school, they promised to dedicate their life to become a millionaire by the age of 50.
They went to California and started their work in Columbia movie studio. They earned $25 a week in that job. They extended their work by setting up lights and driving trucks.
In 1932, they opened a movie theatre in Glendora. It was named as the Beacon. They were unable to pay their regular bills. They don't have money to eat their next food. They ate only a single meal per day. When people were struck without money, they will think a lot to earn a lot. In the same way, these brothers also decided to start their food company. They don't have enough knowledge in food business. But they proved that practice makes one perfect to this world.
In 1940, They started a restaurant which is named as Barbecue restaurant in San Bernardino. Their business wasn't gaining them a good profit after World War II. So, they decided to close the restaurant.
They redesigned their restaurant and decided to implement effective system. At the same night, due to heavy rain, their plan ruined.
Three months later, they reopened the restaurant and shortlisted their menu with Hamburger, French fries and Milkshakes.
Hamburger ----- $ 0.15
French fries ----- $ 0.20
They created a history by their speed delivery system. By this system, they provide the ordered food within few minutes. Initially, the business was not good but later it picked up.
" We almost threw in the towel 3 times " - Richard
Ray Kroc, a milkshake machine salesman decided to meet Mc Donald Brothers after hearing about their growth in the field of food business. When Ray Kroc, went to their restaurant in San Bernardino, he was greatly inspired because of their highly organized system. In kitchen, one worker is preparing burgers, one is packing the burgers and another one is preparing milkshakes.
After thinking a lot that night, Ray Kroc offered them to start a Franchise program. It was a 10 year contract. From this, Kroc would receive a $ 950 franchise fee and 1.9 percentage from each restaurant revenues. He would remit 0.5 percentage to the brothers.
In 1953, Golden arch logo was implemented.
On April 15, 1955, Ray opened the first franchise in Des Plaines, Illinois. In the same year, he launched Mc Donald's corporation. In 1960, he opened 100th restaurant.
Ray wanted to end his relationship with brothers. The brothers asked for $ 2.7 million in cash and they also told that they want the rent of the restaurant in San Bernardino, it was about $ 100,000 per year. Ray agreed but convinced them to keep it out of their contract because it would mess up his accounts.
This was the story behind the Mc Donald's franchises.
